built for a specific device. This means that you can’t just find one and
install it on just anything. You need to find one specifically for your device. For this you need to head to google, so search in this format:<device> <recovery> xdaI recommend that you use TWRP, it’s my personal preference, they are
all about the same though.

The “xda” is there so that you’ll be directed to the xda-developers forums. They
are THE SOURCE for anything regarding android mods.

– Install that recovery!Once you have downloaded the recovery file, open Flashify.

How to Root the Samsung Galaxy S5

galaxy-samsung--644x362 I. Before You Begin

1. You must be using a KitKat device. There are a bunch of ones that work, but nowhere has a good list of  them all so I’d suggest giving this a go and if it doesn’t work, there’s no harm done (it’ll just fail). We DO  know, though, that (at least at the time of writing this) it for sure works on any Galaxy S5 from AT&T and  Verizon.

II. Root the Samsung Galaxy S5

1. Go to Settings > Security > and check Unknown Sources ON to allow us to install third-party apps.

2. On your phone, head to http://towelroot.com.

3. Tap on the Lambda (the big red letter looking icon in the middle of the site).

4. Save the tr.apk file to your device.

5. Pull down the notification shade by pulling down from the top of the device.

6. Tap on the Download Complete notification.

7. Tap Install.

8. Pull down the notification shade by pulling down from the top of the device.

9. Tap on Installation Complete to open the app.

10. Tap on the Make it Ra1n button and wait for it to do its thing.

11. You should get a success notice, that’s it, you’re rooted.

III. Install SuperSU

To stop unauthorized apps from using the new found root access, we’ll install SuperSU.

1. Go to the Play Store on your device.

2. Search for SuperSU.

3. Tap on the one by Chainfire and install it.

4. Once done, tap the Open button.

5. Allow it to update it’s binaries and anything else it prompts you to do.

IV. Test Root Access

1. Go to the Play Store on your device.

2. Search for Root Checker.

3. Tap on the result and install it.

4. Once done, tap the Open button.

5. Tap Run and make sure it says you are rooted.

Enjoy!

If this procedure helped you, please consider donating to Geohot at his site here.

After that, you can head to our how to section and sort by your device to see all the other things to do with your device once rooted.

How to Install ClockworkMod Recovery on the Pantech Breakout

The Pantech Breakout has been around for quite a while now and, with its 1GHz CPU, 512MB RAM and 4-inch display, can now be termed as a low-end Android smartphone.  But if you are thinking of milking some more out of this aging device, rooting it and installing a custom recovery is the way to go and the guide below will help you get past one of these two steps – Installing a custom recovery (ClockworkMod Recovery in this case).

I.  Before You Begin

1.  This procedure is known to work with the Pantech Breakout running Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread.  If you are running anything other than this, try it at your own risk!

2.  People have reported problems running this procedure on Windows 7 64-bit systems, as the drivers seem to not take properly; so make sure you try this on a Windows 7 32-bit operating system.

2.  Charge your device to 75% or more.

3.  Back up everything you feel is important before you begin.

II.  Necessary Downloads

BreakoutAllinOnePkg.zip [Link available under the Downloads section of this post]

III.  Installing ClockworkMod Recovery

1.  Extract BreakoutAllinOnePkg.zip to a folder on your desktop.

2.  In the extracted folder, go to the Driver subfolder and run Motorola_End_User_Driver_Installation_5.2.0_32bit.exe.  This should install the necessary drivers required for the procedure.

3.  Enable USB Debugging on your device.  To do this, go to Settings > Applications and tick the USB Debugging checkbox.

4.  Connect your device to your PC via a microUSB cable.  If there are any drivers being installed at this point, let Windows 7 do so.

5.  From the extracted BreakoutAllinOnePkg folder, run RecoveryAIO.bat.

6.  Type in 1 and then press the Enter key.

7.  Wait until the process is complete.

8.  Once CWM is installed, pull the battery out of your device, put it back it and immediately press and hold the Search and Power buttons until the splash screen is finished loading.  [This will prevent the device from overwriting the custom recovery with stock; if this happens, you’ll have to go through the whole process again!]

You should now have ClockworkMod Recovery installed on your Pantech Breakout!  To enter recovery, hold the Search and Power buttons when the device is off and once in recovery, use the Volume Up/Down keys to navigate and the camera button to select.

Google launches Nexus 5 handset with Android Kitkat

Nexus 5Google has officially unveiled the latest incarnation of its flagship Nexus smartphone.

Made by LG, the handset is smaller, slimmer and lighter than the Nexus 4 but its 4.96in (126mm) touchscreen is bigger.

The Nexus 5 has been developed to show off the capabilities of the new version of the Android operating system.

Called Kitkat, the software has been designed to work well on both high-end smartphones and cheaper feature phones.

The alliance with Google has helped bolster LG’s fortunes even though, according to statistics from Gartner, it is still a long way behind rivals Samsung and Apple. Read more of this post

Could iPhone’s fingerprint sensor help kill off passwords?

It’s a barely noticeable stainless steel ring, embedded in the new iPhone’s home button.

But the fingerprint sensor built into Apple’s latest smartphone, which was unveiled on Tuesday, could signify the beginning of the end for the pesky password.

The Touch ID feature will allow users to access their phones with a press of the finger, without the need to remember complex sequences of letters or numbers.

Biometric technology, which uses the body’s unique features as an identification technique, has been around for a while.

Scotland Yard used fingerprints as early as 1901, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle knew enough about the distinctive features of the human ear to work it into one of his Sherlock Holmes stories. Read more of this post

New iPhones: The internet reacts to Apple’s launches

iPhone 5C

Apple’s annual iPhone update.

Yes, the high-end 5S handset gets a fingerprint sensor. Yes, there’s a new cheaper version, the 5C, made with plastic back which comes in colours. Yes, both come equipped with Jony Ive’s revamped iOS7 which is now ready for launch.

But perhaps the biggest surprises were over what was not included.

No NFC (near field communication) chip to turn the handsets into digital wallets. No boost in the number of megapixels on the camera. No option for 128 gigabytes storage and no bigger screen. Read more of this post

Samsung unveils Galaxy Gear smartwatch accessory

Samsung has unveiled a smartwatch with a colour screen that can show alerts, be used for voice calls and run apps.

The Galaxy Gear had been highly anticipated since the firm is currently the world’s best-selling smartphone maker and has beaten Microsoft, Apple and Google to unveil such a device.

Samsung called it a “fashion icon”.

However, analysts warned that a decision to limit the watch to working as an accessory to other Galaxy Android devices might limit its appeal.

Samsung has previously said growth in the sales of its handsets was slowing, so investors are eager to see if it can find another successful product.

Galaxy Gear The Galaxy Gear is being made available with a range of colourful watch straps

It unveiled the watch – which will go on sale from 25 September – at the Ifa consumer tech show in Berlin.

“The introduction of the Galaxy smartwatch comes as no surprise to the industry, which has been expecting Samsung to beat the likes of Apple – as well as watchmakers and other consumer electronics companies – to market,” said Chris Green, principal technology analyst at the consultancy Davies Murphy Group. Android ‘accounts for 79% of phone malware’

Some 79% of malicious attacks on mobiles in 2012 occurred on devices running Google’s Android operating system, US authorities have said.

Public information website Public Intelligence published the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation memo to US police and emergency medical personnel.

Nokia’s Symbian system, on the Finnish company’s basic-feature handsets, had had the second-most malware attacks.

Apple’s iOS had had 0.7% of attacks.

Android is the world’s most popular mobile operating system, and the memo blamed its high share of attacks on its “market share and open-source architecture”. Read more of this post

Android KitKat unveiled in Google surprise move

Google is calling the next version of its mobile operating system Android KitKat.

The news comes as a surprise as the firm had previously indicated version 4.4 of the OS would be Key Lime Pie.

The decision to brand the software with the name of Nestle’s chocolate bar is likely to be seen as a marketing coup for the Swiss food and beverage maker.

However, Google told the BBC that it had come up with the idea and that neither side was paying the other.

“This is not a money-changing-hands kind of deal,” John Lagerling, director of Android global partnerships, told the BBC.

Instead, he said, the idea was to do something “fun and unexpected”. Read more of this post
